Lea Nikel was one of the most prominent painters in Israeli art, who was who has been called the "First Lady of Israeli Painting".

Born in Zhitomir, Ukraine in 1918.
Died in Moshav Kidron, Israel in 2005.  

Lea Nikel is known for her great contribution to the assimilation of the abstract style in art in Israel. Her paintings are characterized by intense colors, vitality and spontaneity, and express inner richness. Nikel has a unique handprint. She incorporated free brushstrokes, paint drips, paint spots, engraving and finger painting into her works, yet created organized compositions.

Nikel's works have been shown in many exhibitions in Israel and major cities in the world. Her works are in many museums and collections in Israel and around the world.
Among others, she exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv (1961, 1973, 1992), the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (1985, 1992) and the Barbarian Art Center, London (1990). In 1995, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art presented her retrospective exhibition.
Nikel represented Israel in 1964 at the Biennale in Venice.

Lea Nikel won many important awards such as: the Sandberg Prize, Israel Museum, Jerusalem (1972), the Dizengoff Prize on behalf of the Tel Aviv Municipality (1982), the Gamzo Prize on behalf of the Tel Aviv Museum (1987), the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters decoration on behalf of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs (1997). Nikel also won the Israel Prize for painting in 1995.
