Raffi Lavie was a painter, art critic, curator, and art teacher for generations of artists in Israel.

Born in 1937 in Ramat Gan, Israel.
Died in 2007 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Raffi Lavie is considered a significant figure in Israeli art. Lavie was one of the founders of the "Ten Plus" group, which was considered a breakthrough in Israeli art (1965). In addition, Levie was a central artist in the "Tel Aviv Artists" group, which is known for the "Want of Matter" (late 1980s).

Lavie's style is minimalistic. His works are identified with the "Want of Matter" style, which is deliberately "poor". The style is characterized by the use of materials that were not accepted and considered inferior such as plywood substrate, acrylic and industrial paints, combining photographs and reproductions in his works and scribbling with pencil and pen. Lavie expressed in his works an aesthetic that turned the banal into art.

Rafi Lavi's works have been shown in many solo and group exhibitions in Israel. His paintings are in important collections in Israel. Among others, he exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum, Tel Aviv (1979, 1993) and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2003, 1973).

In 1988 the Ramat Gan Art Museum presented a retrospective of Lavi's works and in 2002 a retrospective of his work was held at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.

Two years after his death, he was chosen to represent Israel at the Art Biennale, Venice, Italy (2009).

Raffi Lavie is considered to have a great influence on the world of Israeli art. In 1978 he received the Dizengoff Prize for the art of painting and sculpture, Tel Aviv Jaffa Municipality, Tel Aviv.
